You have got a excellent dog. He stays focused and understands what’s going on,” said Sal Roseland, proprietor of R&R Pheasant Hunting in Seneca, S.D., right after a couple of hours spent hunting his farm’s milo, corn and CRP fields an excursion that created hundreds of pheasant flushes. “When most people bring their dogs here, even Master-degree trained ones, they typically blow up and run out of control simply because of the number of birds.”

I was proud of my black Lab, Kona, for performing effectively, but chalked it up to luck and Roseland’s compliment to that of a savy businessman. It wasn’t right up until a year later on when Eric Johannsen of Johannsen Farms Outfitting in close by Tolstoy, a house with virtually 1000′s of wild birds, repeated the praise practically verbatim that I started to wonder not what my canine had completed nicely, but what many individuals have been lacking in their training and hunting routines that left them so woefully unprepared for an encounter with quite a few birds.

More important than any kudos your canine could obtain, is creating the most of a trip to the epicenter of hunting for your chosen species of upland bird—be that South Dakota for pheasants, south Texas for quail or Wisconsin for grouse. The memory you return with can be that of opportunities capitalized upon or lost. It all boils down to how your dog performs when his coaching literally runs headlong into his genetic instincts.

Even if you by no means program to go to a destination popular for record hatch and harvest statistics, a dog that remains beneath control when faced with the sensory overload that accompanies the excitement of the hunt, numerous birds and numerous gunshots can spend large dividends. For a canine that is used to tracking a single pheasant or satellite quail, but abruptly finds itself hot on the trail of a huge covey’s really worth of birds, it could mean the variation among placing two birds in the bag, or viewing as they flush out of selection and disappear more than the horizon—with your dog in hot pursuit.

Close Encounters
When a canine, even one particular trained to a large degree in the managed setting of a area trial or test, encounters a huge number of birds on a hunt, its thoughts usually becomes conflicted. Nature becomes pitted against nurture and the sheer excitement of huge quantities of fresh scent, possibly even with birds in such close proximity as to allow the canine to see and hear them, often causes the dog to “blow up,” or resort to a state of hunting strictly by instinct and purely for self-gratifying reasons.

You will see the canine commence to work the ground extremely quickly 1st taking one particular scent trail and then yet another. He becomes frantic in his try to procedure and decipher all the messages he’s receiving from the multitude of interlaced ground and airborne trails.

“There’s so much scent around that a dog cannot focus on a single specific trail to follow it is like becoming in a blender,” mentioned Tom Dokken of Dokken’s Oak Ridge Kennels in Northfield, Minn.

As the confusion progresses, a canine starts to rely significantly less and much less on you and prior instruction and a lot more and far more upon instinct to attain his ultimate goal: bird make contact with. As the canine mentally devolves, the handler experiences a reduction of control standard coaching tenets like selection and backing go out the window as the dog starts chasing and disregarding commands.

“The longer a canine is permitted to work in a frantic state of mind, the much more right and permissible he thinks it is,” said Dan Hosford, of Dan Hosford Education in Spokane, Wash. “It’s some thing that magnifies extremely, quite swiftly.”

On the Hunt
Once the downward spiral begins, it becomes a self-rewarding behavior for the dog. Even though in a frantic state of thoughts he’s encountering much more and far more bird scent, which instruction and genetics have honed to an severe want. He inches evercloser to his purpose of bird make contact with, regardless of your involvement.

To quit the cycle, you have to brief-circuit the dog’s frenzied thoughts and bring him back underneath manage. You do this simply by stopping the dog for a handful of moments.

“The capability to cue a dog to cease is invaluable. Not only can you get items shut down before they escalate out of control, but it is also similar to rebooting your dog’s pc,” mentioned Ronnie Smith, who trains bird dogs at his kennel in Oklahoma via the spring and summer season and guides hunters in quail-rich south Texas throughout hunting season. “When things come unraveled, rebooting that computer permits your dog to catch his breath, regain his senses and compose himself.”

Stopping the dog and possessing it stand, if it is a pointer, or sit, if it’s a flushing breed, is a tactic echoed by Hosford. “When you see that dog commence to grow to be frantic, you have to stop him as soon as possible,” he mentioned. “That allows him to start off regaining his focus. His thoughts stops spinning about the bird scent and his focus returns to the handler.”

When the dog stops, leave him at a standstill as you calmly walk to him. Give him a couple of seconds to regain his composure wait till the “crazed” search in his eye fades away and he begins to show far more relaxed physique language ahead of releasing him.

If your canine becomes frantic again, repeat the method, but as a substitute of releasing him immediately after a number of moments, make him heel for a while as you walk by way of the area. The return to simple obedience reinforces the standards and expectations despite the excitement of the setting.

In truth, if your canine can not handle the stimulation or just isn’t very prepared, heeling permits him, specifically a retriever, to achieve structured encounter.

“Keep it simple in a large stimulus predicament by giving the canine duties that aren’t as complicated. Heeling via a field whilst other canines work reduces the complexity and makes it possible for you to preserve him beneath management,” said retriever trainer Mike Stewart of Wildrose Kennels in Oxford, Miss. Stewart additional that acting as a blocker is another function that enables a dog to participate in the hunt—including producing retrieves—but with fewer intricacies required.

Issues, Answers
Giving your dog the suitable foundation through instruction experiences can aid minimize the impact and duration of sensory overload, even if it can’t eliminate it completely. But if education is the answer, it is also part of the problem for numerous men and women and their canines.

Although it’s not possible to replicate the excitement of a hunt, particularly 1 involving numerous wild birds, many amateurs compound the dilemma by coaching in as well sterile or too convoluted a manner and do not give transition knowledge.

Also sterile: To educate our dogs a variety of ideas, we use single birds in very controlled situations. It is the very best way to train a new idea, but when the dog progresses and has discovered what’s necessary, that sterile scenario becomes a hindrance.

“People constantly train in the same place and the dog learns to memorize it and the routine. He gets confident and, although self-confidence is crucial, it tends to make it less complicated and enables him to pick up on cues and know what’s going to occur,” mentioned Hosford. “Then when he gets into a new field and encounters massive groups of birds he does not know how to behave or what to do.”

The remedy: The moment your canine has a lesson mastered, do not hold repeating the situation over and more than. Challenge his comprehending of the fundamental concept by changing areas, making use of far more and far more live birds and including gunshots and other dogs to the situation.

As well convoluted: Growing the complexity and stimulus of a education session too speedily will trigger your dog to come unhinged. This helps make it impossible for him to find out the fundamental notion of a lesson and fully undermines your control. It can also produce a misconception for the canine of acceptable behavior in confusing circumstances.

The amount of birds taken in a hotspot like South Dakota can challenge any dog&#039s manners.

“When you move a dog too rapidly by producing a lesson as well complex and adding too much stimulus at the same time, they’re going to blow up,” said Stewart. “You have to successfully total a activity several instances in several distinct locations before it commences to turn into a habit. Then you can begin to add complexity and stimulus, but you have to introduce people separately.”

The remedy: Break your coaching sessions down and be cognizant of the pressures positioned on your dog. Stewart, who runs numerous repetitions in a single session, likes to effectively full five sessions in 5 diverse locations ahead of adding initial complexity (such as substantially lengthening a scent trail) and then stimulus (this kind of as firing blank shots although the canine is following the scent trail).

Transition instruction: While every training session must be planned and balanced with certain lessons in thoughts, they are personal ideas that gradually develop on one particular one more to generate a foundation that teaches your dog how to behave and react under controlled circumstances.

Transition training, on the other hand, takes all of individuals learned skills of ever-increasing complexity and stimulus and forces the canine to choose which 1 to use and when. It is a reasonable hunting situation for the canine, but with no the stress on you of hunting wild birds with friends. You can remain in control, enforce specifications and expectations, and even turn the circumstance into a coaching session.

The answer: When you believe your canine is ready for the area, take him to a hunting preserve. Spend to have birds released and location them in bunches to heavily scent an region. This is not about shooting the birds, it’s about preserving manage of your canine and teaching him to keep targeted in the face of extreme temptation.

Put your coaching to use and if necessary, halt your dog until finally his focus returns and he understands that all the very same rules apply despite the mind-boggling sum of scent.

You may possibly say, “Those tests look so simple I don’t see the benefit would seem like a waste of time” I wouldn’t recommend saying that to a person who’s spent weeks of planning, experienced the excitement and understands the worth of puppy tests. I’m positive they’d be speedy to inform how thrilling the encounter was and how much fun they’ve had in planning, doing work with other club members, and how significantly they and their dog had gained in the method.

So for those of you thinking about a new pup or who have one sleeping on your lap correct now, study on. Hopefully we’ll spark an interest, 1 that really effectively could last a lifetime. Feel me, hunt tests for young canines are excellent alternatives for you and your pup.

Beyond the excitement and individual gains of new close friends and a much better appreciation for your pup’s inherited abilities, puppy tests give strong positive aspects to severe breeders, breed clubs and anyone organizing to create a excellent hunting companion, or hoping to continue onto higher degree competition or testing. These tests provide a great venue for optimistic exposure of pups in developing a solid, self-confident foundation for superior training.

No matter the breed or form of puppy you have—flusher, pointer, versatile or retriever—there are plans developed for your requirements. In every section there are tests that have been developed over time to offer properly-believed-out, fair and consistent standards for the evaluation of the key attributes and abilities expected to become successful hunting dogs. These tests are typically developed with youthful canines from all around six to 16 months old.

For retrieving breeds there is the AKC’s retriever hunt test plan and the UKC’s Hunting Retriever Club system. Pointing breeds can take portion in AKC’s pointing breed hunt check program. The AKC’s spaniel hunt tests are readily available for flushing breeds.

For the versatile breeds there is the North American Versatile Hunting Canine Association (NAVHDA) hunt tests. By “versatile breeds” we are referring to people breeds originating in Europe, intended for hunting each upland birds and waterfowl. Please check out each and every club’s site for much more information on each plan.

By now, I’m sure you have gathered that I’m a robust advocate of puppy tests. As a matter of fact I’m in favor of check programs in general, from beginning to end, all the way by means of the much more sophisticated tests. My point is, the far more time you devote with your dog during the yr, the far better hunting crew you’ll be when bird season rolls close to.

Most testing organizations start training or test days by gathering to introduce the check officials and go over the basic plans for the day.

For newbies and old-timers alike, these programs are a wonderful way to meet individuals with prevalent interests and understand much more about the care, working out and instruction of gun canines. With the extra advantage of extending your hunting season into a yr-round sport, what could be much better?

In hunt tests you are not competing with other individuals and their canines, so everybody can qualify. Your pup is evaluated throughout simulated hunting scenarios by nicely-skilled judges according to how he measures up to nicely-established requirements. It is fantastic exciting. We help each and every other and we also cheer for every single other, which makes this a great family activity as effectively.

On behalf of every of the clubs mentioned, I invite you to test their internet sites for occasion schedules and to locate a club or chapter. Contact the clubs for specifics on meetings and training days in your location and get involved.

Don’t be concerned about staying a stranger all clubs are on the view for new faces and are fast to make you really feel welcome…in other words, they’ll put you to function. But you will not be sorry, so I advocate you take the time to see what it’s about.

• Contact the club get in touch with to let them know you are interested in visiting a meeting or coaching day.

• Be positive you have very good directions, your Garmin GPS and a contact’s cell amount. Very good education or check web sites are usually off the beaten path, so be ready for the back roads.

• Be certain you have a secure, secure kennel in your car for your pup, a regular collar, a short lead and a long lead or examine-rope.

• When you first arrive make a point to find your contact and introduce yourself, leaving your pup in the kennel.

• Following meeting important people, inquire about an workout area in which you can air your pup without having interfering with other individuals.

• When you have aired your dog, return it to the kennel and make certain of shade and ventilation, then examine back in with the people to see what’s following.

From this point on I’m certain the day’s activity will fall into place, as you have shown real interest, “dog ethics” and respect for other people, and that you are ready with some of the fundamental coaching equipment.

Please come out and join us. Even if you have an older canine and a bunch of encounter, you will love these hunt check programs, not to mention the business of other canine fanatics. Past the puppy ability tests there are superior ranges, each and every a small a lot more demanding and fitting for your dog.

African Jacana Grootlangtoon (Actophilornis africanus)

The African Jacana is endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, with a wide range extending from Senegal to Ethiopia and southwards through the savanna belt into southern Africa (Hayman 1986). Here it is concentrated, as a breeding species, to the subtropical east and north. The largest population concentration in southern Africa is in the Okavango Delta, with high reporting rates also in Zimbabwe, the Caprivi Strip, the eastern Transvaal and Swaziland, and coastal KwaZulu-Natal.

Scattered records elsewhere provide evidence of a high incidence of vagrancy. There is a band of records running along the Vaal River, from the Transvaal into otherwise inhospitable territory in the northern Cape Province. The cluster of records along the Fish River south of Ai-Ais (2717CD), and along the Orange River in the Richtersveld (2817A), appears not to have been detected previously (Hockey & Douie 1995).

In optimum habitat it may be found at high densities (e.g. 3–5 birds/ha), and a single large (16 000 ha) wetland, such as the Nyl floodplain (2428DA), may support up to 800 birds when conditions are suitable. Ephemeral wetlands of this type provide important breeding areas but, since they dry and flood erratically and unpredictably, do not provide permanent habitat and the species is consequently subject to much local
movement. On the Nyl floodplain a 57% per month turnover of individuals at one locality was recorded during the course of one breeding season (Tarboton 1993a).

African Jacana Habitat

It is always associated with aquatic habitats; it frequents a variety of wetlands, being most typically found on seasonal pans and floodplains, and along the fringes of slowflowing, meandering rivers in warm to hot areas where emergent, floating hydrophytes provide it with its preferred foraging substrate. Vagrant birds that move beyond the normal breeding range may be found on estuaries, lagoons, sewage disposal works, ornamental ponds and elsewhere. At Gobabeb Research station (2315CA) in the Namib Desert, one arrived and spent time at a birdbath.

African Jacana Movements

The models reveal no evidence for seasonality. On the other hand, the high incidence of vagrancy into marginal areas, the measured turnover of individuals on the Nyl floodplain, and ringing results, demonstrate that it is an itinerant wanderer, capable of wide-ranging dispersal away from breeding areas. Adult birds ringed in Zimbabwe and the Transvaal were recovered and resighted, respectively, 186 and 300 km away from the point where they were ringed (SAFRING).

African Jacana Breeding

The models show that breeding occurs throughout the year, but is concentrated in summer. The timing of the peak varied regionally, from early summer (October) in the northwest (Zone 1) to late summer (April) in the east (Zone 7). Tarboton (1993b) showed that it has a strictly summer breeding season in the south of the range (e.g. in KwaZulu-Natal 97% of records show egglaying occurring November–March), but the breeding season becomes more extended northwards (e.g. in Zimbabwe only 68% of records were November–March) (Irwin 1981). The bimodal peak of breeding in Zone 1, and to a lesser extent in Zone 5, is also confirmed by egglaying data (Irwin 1981; N.J. Skinner in litt.).

African Jacana Historical distribution and conservation

The current distribution closely resembles that given by Stark & Sclater (1906). Wetlands suitable for the African Jacana to breed are becoming increasingly threatened by water management schemes, but it does adapt to artificial wetlands; at Lake Kariba it is abundant on the floating weed Salvinia molesta (Irwin 1981). Although not currently considered to be at risk, the species could become threatened in the future.
See the species text for Lesser Jacana Microparra capensis.

Red-bellied Woodpecker, honeyguides, barbets, and toucans form a well-supported clade with approximately 355 species. This clade, commonly referred to as Pici, share with the South American clade Galbulae (puffbirds and jacamars) a zygodactyls foot with a unique arrangement of the deep flexor tendons (Gadow’s Type VI). Based on these characters, Pici and Galbulae are often considered sister taxa, and have in traditional classification been placed in the order Piciformes.

Red-bellied Woodpecker, however, a wealth of other morphological characters that contradicts this association, and indicates that Pici is closer related to the Passeriformes (passerines) than to Galbulae. Galbulae, in turn, is considered more closely related to the rollers and ground-rollers (Coracii). In this study, we evaluate these two hypotheses by using DNA sequence data from exons of the nuclear RAG-1 and c-myc genes, and an intron of the nuclear myoglobin gene, totally including 3400 basepairs of aligned sequences. The results indicate a sister group relationship between Pici and Galbulae, i.e. monophyly of the Piciformes, and this association has high statistical support in terms of bootstrap values and posterior probabilities. This study also supports several associations within the traditional order Coraciiformes, including a sister group relationship between the kingfishers (Alcedinidae) and a clade with todies (Todidae) and motmots (Momotidae), and with the bee-eaters (Meropidae) placed basal relative to these three groups.

Observation on a hand-raised pair of Red-bellied Woodpeckers (Centurus carolinus) which nested in captivity, and observations on wild birds from 1957 to 1960 form the basis of this paper. I did most of my field work in swampy lands near Seneca, Maryland. Additional observations were made at the Archbold Biological Station, Lake Placid, Florida. Continuing studies of Red-bellied Woodpeckers have enabled me to complete, in some degree, an account of their early breeding behavior presented in a previous report (Kilham, 1958a). The additional aspects of behavior are illustrated by the histories of Pairs A and B.

Breeding Season

Observations on Pair A indicate that male Red-bellied Woodpeckers may stay on their breeding territories the year around and those females, in some instances, may compete for them early in the year.

(a) Territory of Male A

I observed Male A excavating a nest hole in the dead limb of an elm on 22 February 1959. A subsequent wind storm broke the limb where the excavation had weakened it, but in the fall of the same year I watched Male A excavate a new hole just below the site of the old one. I did not see him in association with any other Red-bellied Woodpecker at this time. On 20 December I saw Male A fly to his excavation and start to tap as a female, making grr,, err notes as she flew, alit on the other side of the cavity and joined in mutual tapping. It was of interest that the woodpeckers were using the same hole for actual nesting by 30 April 1960, when I observed them in full copulation on an adjacent limb.

(b) Competition of two females for a male

On 30 January and again on 6 February 1960, I witnessed prolonged conflicts between two females appearing to be rivals for Male A and the hole he had excavated. Events were similar on both mornings. The females had two centers of their continually renewed conflicts, one being Male A, who called kwirr, kwirr from various tree tops but appeared to be indifferent to the actual fighting, and the other, the nest excavation in the elm. The intruding female might fly to either place. What I judged to be Female A would follow closely, hitch up toward her rival, then fly out in any direction in a long circular pursuit. All pursuits appeared to be restricted within the usual limits of the male’s territory. The females were silent most of the time, but one might call thee-wuck, thee-wuuck, and in two instances they clashed in bodily contact. Figure 1 illustrates an episode in the conflict. As Female A flew to the tree in which her rival and the male were resting, she floated the last 10 feet of the way with wings outstretched in a threat display. There were few respites in the conflicts. I watched one going on continuously for two and one-half hours on 6 February. I had observed a similar situation among Yellow-shafted Flickers (Colaptes auratus) in which two females contended for a male in mid-winter (Kilham, 19593).

Events Leading to Actual Nesting

in mid-winter (Kilham, 19593). Events leading to actual nesting.-Pair B was well situated for observation because the nest hole was only 20 feet above the ground and remained free of molestation by Starlings (Sturrzus vulgaris). The activities of the two woodpeckers offered many points of comparison with those of my hand-raised pair, whose breeding behavior is described later.

(a) Mutual tapping and nest-site selection.

On 9 March 1958, Male B called kwirr while moving about on the dead stub of a living ash. He pecked at random, as if percussing the underlying wood. There was no sign of an excavation. When I was standing directly below him a little later, he tapped four bursts of about 15 taps each, whereupon his mate flew in and joined in several seconds of mutual tapping. A fresh, shallow excavation appeared on the stub within the next two weeks. Nearly two and one-half months later, on 30 May, I removed two well-feathered young from a nest located at the spot where Pair B had had mutual tapping on 9 March.

(b) Intercommunication during the period of excavation.

The male did most of the excavating. In pauses between bouts of work he often called kwirr, kwirr and his mate, who was usually within a range of 150 yards, would answer cha, cha or a flat-sounding kwirr. Mutual tapping took place periodically. On 29 March, for example, the male was excavating with his body half way in the hole when he dropped down to one side and began to tap. His mate came immediately. The pair then joined in mutual tapping before she flew away. It is probable that the male had heen stimulated to tap by seeing that his mate had come close by. On the following day both woodpeckers were away from their excavation when they suddenly flew to it simultaneously and joined in a bout of mutual tapping. Red-headed W ood p et k ers may communicate in an analagous fashion during the period of excavation (Kilham, 1959a).

(c) Lack of agreement in mated pair.

The nest excavation progressed slowly. It appeared in a variety of ways that the female Red-bellied Woodpecker had a breeding urge less developed than that of her mate in the unusually cold spring of 1958. First, she didn’t participate in the work of excavating and second, on 5 April, I witnessed two occasions following bouts of mutual tapping, when both members of the pair held their bodies in a stiff pose expressive of tension, for one can observe the same pose in conflicts between rival males.

(d) The lone male

The female sometimes left the nesting territory on a long flight over the tree tops to visit, I suspected, a cornfield in the uplands. Her mate, failing to get any response from her at these times made what appeared to human ears to be “frantic” vocalizations. On 12 April, for example, he clung to the entrance of his excavation and called kwirr, kwirr, kwirr every three to five seconds for 40 minutes. I then saw a Red-bellied Woodpecker flying in over the leafless tree tops. The male became silent immediately. A few moments later the pair was together at the excavation. I witnessed a similar episode on 20 April in which the male called kwirr in sets of three as before, persisted for 15 minutes, then became silent when his mate returned.

(e) Behavior of Pair at Time of Egg Laying

Egg-laying probably began within a few days of 20 April. This calculation was made not only by reckoning backward from 30 May when I took two advanced fledglings from the nest but also from two concurrent forms of behavior which indicated that the female had finally accepted the nest hole. The behavior patterns were as follows:

e.1. Both birds remained silent and motionless for eight minutes on 20 April, the male resting inside the nest and his mate on the outside.
e.2. The female then entered the hole. I then heard grr, grr notes. The male was the first to wriggle out the entrance and another silent, motionless period of five minutes followed before the pair flew away.

Red-bellied Woodpeckers are territorial during the nesting season. Evidence for this territoriality is difficult to obtain in well-wooded country but two of the conflicts described below took place along a common boundary more or less equidistant between the excavations of two nesting pairs. Three other conflicts occurred close to nest holes. Features characteristic of these conflicts were that when only two individuals were engaged, they were of the same sex and fought in silence, whereas whenever three or four birds representing two pairs were in conflict, a lively combination of vocalizations, drummings, and displays usually took place. The situations observed were as follows:

Territorial conflicts between two females.-On 3 April 1958, Female A flew low over 50 yards of swamp directly at the female of adjacent Pair B. A silent conflict now took place close to the ground. One female would fly at the other, who would dodge around a tree trunk, but on one occasion the two females rose 3 feet into the air, grappling together as they flew. Both withdrew after several minutes. Their battleground was 90 yards from the excavation of Pair A and 70 yards from that of Pair B. The two females had another conflict at the same place 10 days later, so that there was reason to believe that the area represented a boundary separating the territories of the two pairs. Selander and Giller (1959) found a well-defined boundary separating a pair of Centurus carolinusfrom one of C. aurifrons in Texas.

Entropion is defined as the inward rolling of the eyelid margin in which the eyelashes and eyelid hair (frequently the lower lateral lid) rub the cornea. Etiologies may be congenital, spastic, or cicatricial. This condition usually causes epiphora, blepharospasm, photophobia, conjunctivitis, purulent discharge, corneal vascularization, pigmentation and ulceration, if not surgically treated. Congenital entropion commonly affects dogs and is frequently hereditary in some breeds, whereas cats are uncommonly affected. A predilection for the Traditional Persian Cat breed to present primary entropion has been suggested.

The authors report two cases of entropion in Traditional Persian Cat referred to the Ophthalmology Section of Veterinary College of São Paulo State University UNESP, Jaboticabal SP / Brazil. First case: a male Traditional Persian Cat, 2 years old, with a history of bilateral ocular irritation and purulent discharge for 8 months. Ophthalmic examination revealed epiphora, blepharospasm, photophobia, and bilateral entropion affecting the whole length of the lower eyelids, conjunctivitis and purulent discharge.

Male Traditional Persian Cat, one year old, with the history of bilateral ocular irritation and purulent discharge for 3 weeks. At the ophthalmic examination the animal presented epiphora, blepharospasm, photophobia, severe bilateral entropion affecting the whole length of the lower eyelids, conjunctivitis, purulent discharge, corneal vascularization, superficial ulceration, and edema. Clinical signs were more evident due to ocular pain caused by corneal ulceration. After topical anesthesia the eyelid defect also persisted. Modified Holtz-Celsus and grid keratotomy procedures were performed. The length and width of the lower eyelid skin-muscle resection were similar to the first case. Postoperative treatment consisted of topical application of 0,5 to 1cm of ophthalmic ointment placed over the surgical wounds and into the conjunctive sac of each eye at intervals of 8 hours during 10 days and use of an Elizabethan collar.

Second case: a male Traditional Persian Cat, 1 year old, with a history of bilateral ocular irritation and purulent discharge for 3 weeks. At ophthalmic examination the animal was presenting epiphora, blepharospasm, and photophobia, bilateral entropion affecting the whole length of the lower lids, conjunctivitis, purulent discharge, corneal vascularization, superficial ulceration and edema. The entropion persisted after topical anesthesia in both cats. Surgical treatment was similar in both cases, based on the modified Holtz-Celsus procedure. Grid keratotomy procedure was also performed in the
second case. Both cats had a satisfactory clinic evolution which was confirmed few days after surgery.

Traditional Persian Cat Clinical evolutions of both cases were observed at 1, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days following surgery. Both cats had satisfactory clinical evolution confirmed 15 days after surgery. The eyelid margins restored normal relationship to the globe and normal palpebral fissure with no sign of ocular irritation there are information that suggest the predilection for Traditional Persian Cat breed to present primary entropion. Considering our casuistry, these two cases make this predilection evident. STADES et al observed in breeds frequently affected, such as the Bouvier des Flandres, Labrador and Golden Retriever, and Traditional Persian Cat, a longer mean of palpebral fissure length. This observation agreed with the great amount of enrolled eyelids showed at the ophthalmic
examination of the cases here presented.

The modified Holtz Celsus technique was easily performed and effective for correcting feline entropion, which was verified 15 days after surgery. Both cases may be considered primary feline entropion, although this type of structural defect rarely occurs in Traditional Persian. The chronic blepharospasm and ocular irritation was induced by the entropion, considering that both Traditional Persian in this study had no history of trauma or overt abnormalities to account for the abnormal eyelids. In addition, the entropion persisted after topical anesthesia and relief of the blepharospastic component of entropion. The painful ocular disease increased spastic blepharospasm and ocular irritation. The resulting corneal ulceration in the second case accentuated severity of blepharospasm.

The squirrel monkey head and body of the squirrel monkey measure 12.5 inches and the tail is approximately 16 inches. They typically weigh 1.5 – 2.5 pounds, the smallest in the Cebidae family. It has short, thick fur. The top of the head is black to gray with white around the eyes, ears, throat and sides of neck, and not much hair around the lips and nostrils. Its appendages are reddish or yellow and the shoulders and hind feet are gray, and underparts are whitish to yellowish. The tail has a black tip and is only partially prehensile. The thumb is short but well developed. The males are larger than females and have well developed teeth.

They are diurnal and move silently through the canopy of the trees in troops. The troop size depends on the amount of habitat available. The average size of a troop is 25 providing many eyes for searching for food as well as keeping an eye out for predators. Their thighs are shorter than their lower legs, which allows them to jump from tree to tree. They marking their territory utilizing scent glands which are throughout their fur especially the tail. This allows other troop members to follow a trail through the trees. Squirrel monkeys also follow other monkeys in search of food.

Several females in the group produce a single young per year. Births are seasonal and synchronous. During the mating season males establish a dominance hierarchy by fighting, and the higher ranking ones then interact with the females. Gestation is 5.5 months and usually one baby is born. Squirrel Monkey births typically occur during time of greatest rainfall as there is abundance of food and water. Males do not rear the young, but other females in the troop assist. For the first month an infant rides on the mother’s back. At six weeks the young begin to eat solid foods, though they continue to nurse until they are about six months. Females reach sexual maturity at 2.5 – 3 years. At that time they leave their natal group and join another. Males are sexually mature at 3 to 5 years and either stay in their family group or relocate.

Presenting, Useful Dog Tricks!! Whoever said tricks can’t be useful? Jesse loves helping around the house, and I just love his happy attitude and smile on his face. “Our relationship is based on mutual respect, understanding, and trust. We have a wonderful relationship and bond, and that is the foundation of our training. We train all behaviors through the use of positive reinforcement” Jesse chooses to do the behaviors in this video, and has so much fun bringing smiles to people’s faces. He gets treats for doing his tricks, and enjoys learning new things. Tricks are just one of the activities we enjoy doing together. When not doing tricks, Jesse can be found playing with his cuz ball, chasing squeaker tennis balls, digging in search for lizards, de-fluffing stuffed toys, swimming, and a companioning me on outings. Jesse loves adventure, and lives each and every day to its fullest. Jesse is my best friend, heart dog, and truly a member of the family, and I love him with every beat of my heart. Special thanks to Josh Woodward for the use of the songs “Coffee” both Full & Instrumental version. His music is under Creative Commons that set us a mood.

You don’t have to speak Japanese to understand the sympathetic tones of the two men observing these dogs who are also disaster victims — and one loyal dog refusing to leave his hurt friend’s side. There is so much we don’t understand about the emotional lives of animals. But we know they can suffer tremendously, and we know they care for each other. We wish all the people and animals of Japan heartfelt concern during this incomprehensibly difficult time. We know that the people of Japan will respond like these two friends, never abandoning each other in this time of need. Ganbatte kudasai! (“Don’t give up!”)

The crab-eating macaque Monkey (Macaca fascicularis), are native to the islands of Java, and other Indonesian islands. This species generally forages below 20 meters, mostly in the lower canopy, understory and on the ground. They mostly eat fruit, but they also eat stems, leaves, flowers, seeds, grass, mushrooms, insects, arthropods and bird eggs. When they forage in the mangroves they eat crabs, but have also been seen eating frogs and shrimp. They prefer foraging close to small bodies of water and the amount of time they spend foraging decreases as they move away from the riverbank.

Crab-eating Macaques have a trichromatic vision. That is, they have three kinds of opsins in their cones, which let them see short, medium, and long wavelengths (roughly corresponding to blues, greens and reds, respectively). One advantage of being trichromatic is that the monkeys who eat fruit can determine when the fruit is ripe. Also it helps the monkeys to pick out a food target in a green vegetation background. This species has a strict dominance hierarchy in which every individual knows its rank. There are three main troops in the large macaque enclosure. Each group has an alpha male who protects and leads his troop. In this dominance hierarchy, higher-ranking monkeys and pregnant females have first access to higher quality/preferred food sources.

The Crab-eating Macaques and squirrel monkeys were presented with buckets containing food. We used 12 buckets that were divided into six stations. Each station consisted of one bucket that was covered in red construction paper and one bucket that was covered in green construction paper. The construction paper was attached to the buckets using clear packing tape; this assisted with keeping the buckets water resistant and protected it from the monkeys being able to rip off the paper. The buckets used for crab-eating macaques measured 156.5 cm deep with a 15.5 cm opening. While the buckets used for the squirrel monkeys measured 11 cm wide and 11.5com deep.

To test whether monkeys could learn to associate the colors on these buckets with food sources, we first performed a learning period with open buckets (no tops covering the buckets), such that monkeys that approached each bucket could look inside and see what food source was in it. This open bucket period lasted three trails – June 24th, June 27th and June 29th, and was meant to teach the monkeys that their preferred food was in the red and not the green bucket.

We filled the red buckets with grapes (20 grapes for macaques and 15 for squirrel monkeys) and green buckets with monkey biscuits (20 biscuits for macaques and 15 for squirrel monkeys). We put two small holes in the back wall of each bucket in order to attach zip ties so that we could attach the buckets to the fence of the macaque enclosure or tree branches in the squirrel monkey enclosure. Our trials were conducted at the south perimeter of the property for the crab eating macaques, near the kitchen; these buckets were attached directly to the inside of the fence.

Each station was no less than three meters apart and the red and green buckets at each station were placed one and half meters from one another. In contrast, the squirrel monkey trials were conducted in the rainforest canopy area of monkey jungle. Each station was a distinct location on trees no less than three meters apart. The buckets at each station were tied directly to tree branches or trunks. We prevented any monkeys trying to investigate the buckets until all stations were ready to begin.

Once all the buckets were in place, the timekeeper announced the time and we began recording data. We record the order the monkeys approach the buckets at each station. This data was recorded for a total of five minutes at 30-second intervals. Recording data this way allowed us to determine not only the total number of monkeys that visited each bucket, but also the order in which they approached each bucket (i.e. which bucket did they approach first?). When the five minutes were complete, we gathered the buckets and counted how many pieces of food were left. We then recorded the data on to the timekeeper’s master sheet.

After the third trial date (June 29th) we closed the tops of each bucket so that monkeys could no longer see inside. Each top had a small hole, big enough for a monkey to put its hand into, but covered with a flap of duct tap that prevented the monkeys from seeing inside. In the green buckets we took out the biscuits so that the monkeys would learn that food could only be found in the red buckets. We continued our trials with both species of monkeys, following the data collection protocols for the open-bucket trails (explained above).

The Crab-eating Macaques Monkey learned immediately that they had to put their hands into the opening of the buckets. The squirrel monkeys, on the other hand, had trouble learning that they had to put their hands in the opening. We thus had to demonstrate to the squirrel monkeys that they had to put their hands into the bucket. Eventually all squirrel monkeys learned how to get food out of the covered buckets. We recorded data with these closed buckets for four more trials for each monkey species.
