How do I get my dog to stop humping other dogs?

Postby rudd62 » Fri Sep 18, 2009 9:34 pm

I have a seven year-old boxer mix that has been neutered since he was a puppy. He's lived with other dogs in the past and has never had any issues with aggression or dominance. But in the past year or so, every time a friend or relative brings their dog over, he humps them continuously. He loves to be around other dogs for play dates, but this humping is starting to get out of hand. Any suggestions?

Humping ("mounting", actually) is not always a sexual behavior ... it can be a display of dominance, territoriality, or sometimes play.

This only happens in your own home, when someone brings a dog to visit? I'd say it's a territorial behavior in that situation ... he's showing the visitor who's boss!

What to do depends ... you could choose to allow it and let the dogs work it out on their own.

You could scold or correct your dog for protecting what he perceives as his.

You could tell your friends and relatives that they cannot bring their dogs to your house!

It's up to you how you want to handle it ... me, personally, I'm a fan of letting dogs work things out for themselves (I apply that same principle to kids and I've been called a "neglectful parent" ... just thought you might want to know that for comparison purposes!) .. usually they reach an "agreement" that is satisfactory to the dogs themselves, if not entirely nice to look at for their humans!

My male JRT was neutered at 7 months but still humps the bolster occasionally. He's 8 yrs old now. I let him do it as the poor dog may still have sexual urges altho he cannot produce puppies. We shouldn't force our pet dogs to conform to our wishes so as to "avoid embarrassment" in some cases or deprive him of enjoyment that we are open to. Dogs have a short span on earth so why not let them have some enjoyment like we yearn for? He could also be showing his dominance over other dogs, so let them have a tussle and work out their dogy status. Just love him for what he is.

The problem is he is having trouble controlling his excitement/arousal levels when he plays. The most effective way to get him to stop humping is going to have to come from the other dog correcting him. Be sure you are around just in case he doesn't take the correction well and tries to start a fight. You can also give him lots of time outs every time he gets out of control. The play session ends every time he starts to hump. The time out doesn't need to be long, just put him out of sight until he "gets back into his body" and then try letting him out to play again. When he is playing nicely tell him calmly what a good boy he is. If he goes right back to humping you can time him out again and again. You could also try a squirt bottle filled with water. Any time her tries to be dominant you squirt him. Try to hide the bottle from him so he doesn't know where he is getting squirted from

ha my dogs like that too i snipped is nuggets and he is still humping and all crazy as hell...the vet said oh this will calm him down and stop the humping...it didn't
everytime he humps spray him with a squirt gun or spray bottle of water, that gets mine to stop if that doesn't stop it then just let him hump it out, maybe he needs to hump sometimes

Humping is a dominance act. He's trying to prove he's dominant over those dogs. He's changed since he was a puppy.

It's also part of a routine game dogs tend to play. They mount each other and I like to call it "king of the hill"... they want to see who can knock the other dog down. If it doesn't bother the other dogs, and is not the only type of play, I'd ignore it. -!-

Has there been any sudden change before he started being so dominant? Or does he only do it when other dogs come over? I would say he's having issues about other dogs being in his house. I don't know what you would do unless just not bring other dogs over to the house.

Let him do it,I dont think you can stopit, without him getting it out of his system. Its natural unfortuanetly. I have 2 beagles and they do it constantly, and theyre both female sisters lol.

That answer probably doesnt help anything, but....

Have the rest of his manhood removed so he can't do anything. Or you can look online for dog training manuals. one of them is bound to have something.
