My dog ate onion, what will happen?

Postby geldefsman » Fri Sep 18, 2009 8:21 pm

Hello,

My 1.5 year old 12pound Havanese dog ate a piece of fried onion (about 1cm by 1cm). Are there going to be any effects today or any onset? Or would he have to eat more to have some bad effects?? I accidentally dropped the piece of onion when I was making a stir fry, went to pick it up, but he grabbed if before I could. I pried his mouth open to try and get it out, but he swallowed it before I could do anything...

I love my dog so much and would never want to see anything happen to him.

Thanks for your answers.

Call your vet in the morning but I do not think that is enough to cause any harm.

I have dropped far worse on the floor.......

Just watch for anything of concern.

probably not enough to hurt him but wouldn't hurt calling the vet for advice. He should be okay tho I think.

My dog lived for 15 and a half years and loved onions..A border collie named Duke.. the worst side effect was his breath.

Onions are very bad for dogs I think just one little piece won't harm your baby. Onions are #1 on the list for bad things for dogs (beer,chocolate.. mints --also) I respect someone like you for loving your dog

Hope I helped you I've had 3 poodles in the past 12yrs & I'm like you--I go crazy when they would put something bad in their mouth---- I still have a poodle today--she's my baby &best friend

I am surprised to read that so many people dont know onion is highly toxic and can kill a dog! Where have you all been? Under a rock? The question is a very valid one. My friend had a dog that got on a table and ate a bowl of french onion soup and nearly died.

However, the amount your dog ate is probably far to small an amount to cause any problems, but just keep an eye on him. I am sure he will be fine. (My dog once ate a huge piece that dropped off the BBQ, before i could stop him (bigger dog though) and he was fine.
