How can you tell if your finger is broken?

Yesterday, I was walking my dog with the leash wound around my fingers and she sprinted at a seagull and pinched my ring finger badly. It's been tender ever since and today is pretty swollen and red. Do you think it's broken? Is there any definite way to tell apart from Xrays?
