Why does my dog shake when I leave him?

Postby arlan » Fri Sep 18, 2009 8:03 am

Is it because he's scared of being left alone (I don't leave him that often and when I do it's not for long) or is it because he's trying to make me feel guilty?

Your dog may have separation anxiety, or just does not want to be left alone. Would it help if you leave a radio playing and give him a kong toy stuffed wit goodies to keep him entertained?

Oh, poor thing!

I think that it is because he is scared of you leaving. I don't think he knows that you are feeling guilty. But hey... they are smart. :)

Perhaps you should get him a chew toy or treat when you leave. He will then look forward to you leaving. Maybe that isn't what you want. :)

separation anxiety- I would start leaving him for short periods of time with the radio on and his toys. Try to get him use to it so when you do have to go out for a few hours, he is not freaking out.

Your dog doesn't like to be left alone but when it's necessary to do so, do "four" things & see if it helps.

(1) Leave the radio on with the volume not loud, just so he can hear it. Choose a radio station that plays soothing music.

(2) Leave an article of your clothing down where he can lay next to it. He'll smell your scent & it will calm him.

(3) Leave a light on for him if you're returning home after dark. It'll make him feel more secure.

(4) Make sure he has some toys to play with while you're away. (chewy bones are great too)

Note: I know first hand that these hints do help. Who cares what others say about these hints? Try them & give them a chance to work. When you return home, have a "doggy treat" ready to give him. He'll come to look forward to these snacks.

well he is scared you wont come back but if you give him chew toys to distract him.

OR

Practice leaving coming home

I know you have a certain way you leave the house put your shoes on grab your jacket keys phone purse and walk out right?

well practice to show him you are gonna come back by getting your things together and walk to the door. don't walk out just grab the handle and stop then put everything back. keep repeating the process a couple of times the add the nest step when you think he feels better. you will just keep using on steps to the routine.

The next step is to open the but don't go out. Shut the door and put every thin back

Step 3 walk out and shut the door turn around and go back in.

step 4 go out and stay out side for a min or 2 then go back in this should help in time but it will take a cupple of days I hope it helps

This is the same story with my dog! He can tell when we are going out and starts to shake. He does it because he thinks you might not come back, or he simply wants to go out with you, so he might try to make you feel guilty until you give in and take him with you.
