It's great that you are dog sitting and that you want to bond with it.
There are a few things you can do to have fun with the dog.
You can take the dog for a walk. While you walk her, pet her and talk to her. Also, take her in to the back yard and play fetch, if you have a ball, such as a tennis ball(nothing smaller than a tennis ball because thge dog could choke on it), baseball, or a rubber ball. When she brings the ball back to you, give her a little treat, such as if you have any dog crackers, or if it's ok with the owner, diced peeled apple is a great healthy treat for a dog.
If you don't have any dog toys, call and ask the owner to bring over a couple of the dog's favorite toys. This helps calm the dog by having something familiar with her and gives you something to use to play with her. Also, ask the owner to bring over her favorite dog cracker or treat so that you have a treat to give her. Having something she likes will also help you bond with the dog.
You can also run in the yard and get the dog to run with you and you could talk to her, rubbing her fur as you go near her to get her to chase you. You can play kind of a tug of war with her and one of her toys, or if you have a small towel or rag that is ok to get dirty. Even a sock, like an athletic tube sock, or any cotton sock is great because dogs love to play with them. They stretch too, so if you or the dog tugs on it, it won't tear. Also, tie a knot in the sock to give the dog something to bite on. My dogs love to play with socks. I'm sure you could get this dog to play with one too.
All of these things I've mentioned will help you bond with the dog. Also, dogs have great senses and can tell when someone is a good person who won't hurt them. Call the owner to bring some of the dog's favorite crackers, a couple of toys and her leash so that you can walk her and play with her.
You will do just fine. It's obvious that you care about dogs. Best of luck with your dog sitting. Hope I helped.
