How long does a female cat stay in heat for?

I plan on getting her fixed soon but does her having to be in heat hurt her without getting her knocked up? How long does she stay in heat for? and Yes I'm getting her fixed so don't think I am a bad owner.

Cats can make themselves go in heat at will. It could last for a week or so but she could be in heat a week later.

until you have her spayed.
they go in and out of heat quite often
and stay in about a week at a time
